The above yard is not zoyzia. The brown areas are dead spots. The soil will support only weeds like
the dried up crabgrass you see. New crabgrass will be back in warmer weather to come unless....
Zoysia Grass
Zoysia, unlike the previously mentioned grasses, is a warm season grass.
It is most common is Florida and similar climates.
Of all the warm season grasses, I chose to mention zoysia grass for a reason.
I have seen many lawns in New England that people have resorted to growing zoysia grass.
I say resorted for two reasons.
They do it as their soil is so damaged from chemicals,
quality cool season grasses like fescue, rye, and bluegrass will not grow.
And second and more important, they always regret it.
Why would people regret planting a grass
variety that grows in poor soil conditions?
Zoysia is a very coarse bladed ugly grass.
In New England, zoysia turns brown in the fall and doesn't green up till June.
Zoysiagrass has a very aggressive root system.
This root system overtakes areas capable of growing pretty grass.
It even takes over neighbor's yards, which can cause big problems.
Zoysia grass' root system even tears up
driveways and sidewalks something nasty.
It is much easier to plant zoysia than to get rid of.
I have wonderful success eradicating zoysia
with a simple good fertilizing and over seeding.
With help, you can too.
