Mites

And the damage they cause

Mites of the lawn variety are interesting lil guys.

You most likely will not see them without a magnifying glass. They are that small.

They do major league damage though. Most diseases or insects pick on only one type of grass in the lawn, thus making the lawn thin, not bare.

Mites on the other hand are not that picky. A family of mites will wipe out your entire yard in a matter of days.

They bite into the blade, suck out the juice and move to the next.

In the 1960's there was a serious infestation in Central Park Ny, NY. Central park is pretty big. Bigger than some towns.

The mite damage wiped out the grass in Central Park. All but one small area.

Botanist and horteculterists gathered together to see this strange site.

The question was "Why not this grass? What is so special about this area of grass?"

So they took some into their laboratories and studied it. They discovered that there was something about this grass that the mites could not eat. Maybe it was poisonous to the bugs. Maybe it tasted horrible to them, or maybe their bodies could not digest it. I do not know. I do know it works.

With this knowledge, over the years there are hundreds of grass strains that resist lawn insects and diseases as well. No one seed type will resist all diseases or insects. It is a matter of choosing the right seed type for the insects and diseases in your neighborhood. Most landscapers and suppliers are not aware of these endophyte seeds. If they are they may not admit it as they are expensive so they do not want to incur the cost from their profit. Most landscapers use 50% annual rye grass. It needs to be replanted every year. Job security.

At Natures Way Lawn, we believe that if you put the best into your yard, you will get the best out of it. And save $$$ down the road as well.
